Swiss Jura, fold mountains in Europe, wood engraving, published 1894 - stock illustration
Swiss Jura - fold mountains in Central Europe. Fold mountains are mountains that are formed when at least two tectonic plates of the earth's crust move towards each other and exert pressure on each other, which results in the crust being deformed and pushed up (folded) in the contact zone of the two plates. This creates a single mountain range or even a whole series of approximately parallel mountain ranges, which is why they are also referred to as chain mountains. These mountain ranges are often curved in the map image. Wood engraving, published in 1894.
