circa 1770: George Washington (1732 - 1799), the 1st President of the United States of America (1789 - 1797). At the outbreak of the American Revolution he was chosen as Commander in Chief. After the war he retired, but in 1787 resumed politics. He was elected President in 1789 and re-elected in 1793. He refused to serve a third term. He is buried at Mount Vernon.
