A guest room at Castle Bijaipur. Armed with his marble-white...

RAJASTHAN, INDIA - 2008/10/15: A guest room at Castle Bijaipur. Armed with his marble-white palace built in the 16th century, Rao Saheb Narendra Singh was one of Rajasthan's first Thakors to open his family home to tourists. Although slightly faded around the edges, it's impossible to beat the hotel's location - rising above a cobble-street village and surrounded by the Uindhyachal mountain range, which is a short drive from the bustling city of Chittorgarh and further afield, Udaipur. Sixteen rooms - some furnished with antique pieces, open-air lounge areas with low slung fans and a slate blue swimming pool are tucked amongst the turrets and courtyards of the three-storey palace, which comes alive to the sounds of local musicians at cocktail hour. Most visitors come here on a tour - to trek into the surrounding hills on the castle's stable of fine-boned Marwari horses, or for the intrepid, week-long safaris through nearby wildlife sanctuaries and tribal lands, sleeping in tents along the way. Others come for the daily yoga classes taken by Narendra Singh himself, who fell in love with India's ancient art of breath through movement after a visiting yogi showed him a few asanas. Since then, the reining Thakor's gentle but effective yoga retreats have become a highlight; Kate Moss recently checked in for a whole month. (Photo by Leisa Tyler/LightRocket via Getty Images)
