Vadodara, INDIA: Indian photographer Homai Vyarawalla poses with her Rolleiflex camera at her home in Vadodara, 06 March 2006. Ninety-three year old Homai lays claim to the title of India's first female photojournalist. Starting her career in the 1930's- with her parents permission and after finishing her studies - by assisting Maneksha, a photographer from the British Ministry of Information, whom she later married. She had her first publication in the 'Bombay Chronicle' in 1939 for which she was paid one Indian Rupee. Publications such as Time-Life used her post independence images of politicians including Nehru, Ho Chi Minh and other events of historical importance including the crossing into India from Tibet of H.H.The Dalai Lama in 1959.UNESCO recently published a book of her work which was launched in New Delhi.
