The frontrunner is former General Ghazouani, a longtime ally of Abdel Aziz, whose two elected five-year terms were preceded by a military coup in 2008. Mauritania will go to the polls on June 22, 2019, with a second round planned for 6 July if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.
