Margaret Chase Smith Boarding Airplane

Senator Margaret Chase Smith says farewell at Idlewild Airport as she boards a plane for London on the first leg of her two part around-the-world journey, which will include a stop behind the Iron Curtain in Moscow. She is dividing her world trip into two parts in order to be on hand for the action of the Senate on the McCarthy censure report. Senator Smith is being accompanied by a cameraman and a soundman from the Edmund R. Murrow See It Now program so that a "diary" of the trip can be made for television viewers. She will not accept a fee from the program, and no government funds are involved in the trip. The Maine Senator said she agreed to the filming of the trip so that millions of Americans may share her experience and be provided with a better insight in world affairs and conditions.
