With official race vehicles following closely behind, The Golem Group's vehicle, Golem I, approaches Highway 247, 4 miles into the the DARPA Grand Challenge in Barstow Saturday. Golem I made it to mile 5.2. None of the 15 vehicles finished the race. The race requires autonomous robotic ground vehicles to successfully navigate a course from Barstow to Primm, Nevada. The course covered about 200 miles of off–and–on road terrain. The vehicles were unmanned and not remotely driven, but relied on GPS computer technology.
