TORONTO, ON - APRIL 2: Dr. Andrea McCart, surgical oncologist at Mount Sinai, who is treating abdominal cancers in a very novel way. Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, or HIPEC, it is used in combination with aggressive surgery to treat select patients with appendix, colon or bowel cancer, or peritoneal mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the abdominal lining. Unlike systemic chemotherapy, which is delivered intravenously, HIPEC delivers chemotherapy directly to the abdomen during surgery.
