Former staff of Beijing's landmark Frien
Former staff of Beijing's landmark Friendship Store gather to protest outside the main entrance of the store in Beijing, 01 July 2003. Some 200 workers gathered in front of the famed institution to protest pending layoffs and the restructuring of the store's retail sector, as many as half of the store's nearly 800 workers will be laid off while the second through fourth floors of the building are closed for what owners claim are rising losses due to a fall in tourism brought on by the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
