MANILA, PHILIPPINES - 2003/04/01: Jim-Boy watches a man have the face of Jesus tattooed onto his back. Just 6 years old, Jim-Boy lives with his father in his cell in Manila City Jail.
The jail was built for 800 prisoners by the Spanish in the mid nineteenth century. Today it is home to over 4.500 inmates.Tensions run high in the prison and fights are common. During the last major riots in 1999, seven people, including a child, died.
The biggest killer in the prison is disease, with Tuberculosis, and asthma topping the list. In 2002 alone over 50 inmates succumbed to respiratory tract diseases. Guilty until proven innocent, many inmates are condemned to wait up to 9 years before getting a full trial.
The inmates at the jail are divided between four gangs: Bahalagang (fearless), Sputnik, Commando and Batang City Jail. Each gang has around 400-800 members each. (Photo by Gerhard Joren/LightRocket via Getty Images)
