(Original Caption) A new heart is lowered into Philip Barnum's chest September 20th by University of Michigan surgeons. The 69-year-old Kalamazoo man received the healthy heart of Herman Opdenhoff, 37, who died September 20th. This photo was made by the University of Michigan Photography Unit near the beginning of Michigan's first heart transplant operation.
