Sam Snead Examining Golf Ball Embedded in Course

(Original Caption) Sam Snead, of White Sulpher Springs, Virginia, is shown squatting as he examined his ball, embedded in the grass at rain-swept Inverness golf course during first round of the National Open Tourney. Watching Snead is Charles Kocsis. After a discussion of the embedded ball, officials permitted Snead to pick up the ball and drop it over his shoulder for a better lie. He did this three times and couldn't get a better lie, so officials allowed him to place the ball. At the half-way mark in the tourney, Snead had a 148 - ten strokes behind leaders Dick Mayer and Billy Joe Patton, who are tied with 138.
