Germany To Shutter Several Coal-Fired Power Plants By March 30

BERGHEIM, GERMANY - MARCH 25: Water vapour rises from cooling towers of the Niederaussem coal-fired power plant on March 25, 2024 in Bergheim, Germany. A total of 3.1 gigawatts of coal-fired power production, including from two power blocks at Niederaussem and one at the nearby Neurath plant, plus another four blocks at other plants, will go offline permanently by March 30. All of them had been slated for earlier closure, though their operation had been extended to compensate for cancelled natural gas imports from Russia following the outbreak of Russia's war in Ukraine.
