Hot Spring Town’s Snow Sculptures Ready To Melt Hearts

A crowd of nearly 1500 figures appeared in rural Shiramine, Ishikawa Prefecture, on February 12,2016 in Hakusan, Japan—all of them made of snow. Ranging from palm-sized to over four meters tall, the snow figures included brightly colored anime and manga characters, a Shinkansen and were lit by candles. Because of this winter’s unusually high temperatures, the snow sculptures were coated in salt and protected by umbrellas to keep them from melting, according to the local tourism association.
