David Cameron speech on ageing UK population; David Cameron MP (Conservative Party Leader) speech SOT - Talks about enjoying the mornings events - Part of what I'm trying to say is about challenging idle assumptions we have in this country about older people, you sort of see them in the press at the moment, on the one hand, 'how can younger people possibly be interested in older people?' - it's an absurd thing to say, it's a bit like saying 'how can old people be interested in the young?', when we know they are, again 'how can someone who's interested in the Internet combine this with an interest in older people?', but it's actually often the older people who are the heaviest users of the Internet - This is one of a series of speeches setting out the fundamental principle on which my political philosophy is based, it's called social responsibility, last week I spoke about the situation of disabled people, next week I'll be talking about teenagers and young adults, in all these speeches I'm making one incredibly simple point, I believe there is such a thing as society but it's just not the same thing as the state, I believe that people, not just government, have the answers to the challenges that we face, it is social responsibility not state responsibility, which I believe will deliver the healthy, wealthy and happy society we all want to see / This is a profoundly different understanding of the role of government and the nature of society from the one we've lived under for the past decade, for instance, the Labour government often talks about security in old age, this is a nobel ambition which I share, but I believe in something else too, I want to see security and dignity in old age / Security isn't enough, as individuals, we don't just want to be safe, we want to be independent as well as safe / Take pensions, of course we want security, meaning a better income for older people, but we also want to see dignity, meaning older people not having to prove thei...
