Youth Rally - Anti-Christopher Columbus Day

NEW YORK, NY – OCTOBER 14, 2019: Fourth annual Anti-Christopher Columbus Day Youth rally and march. Activist from 'Decolonize This Place' and NYC student youth rallied at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) next to the statue of statue of The Equestrian Statue of Theodore Roosevelt on the upper west side of Manhattan. Demonstrators demand the renaming of 'Columbus Day' to 'Indigenous People’s Day' because Columbus Day is a “celebration of slavery” according to the protestors. The march also visited several parts of Central Park in memory of the land that was once owned by the Native American Indian. Per Wikipedia: "According to a letter by Pieter Janszoon Schagen, Peter Minuit and Dutch colonists acquired Manhattan on May 24, 1626, from unnamed Native American people, who are believed to have been Canarsee Indians of the Lenape, in exchange for traded goods worth 60 guilders, often said to be worth US$24." Among other topics were: ‘No New Jails’ (including the closing of Riker’s Island); the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). (Footage by Tomas Abad/Getty Images)
