Hundreds protest in Tokyo against human rights violations in Asia

TOKYO, JAPAN - MAY 09: Hundreds of people on Sunday (May 9) took to the streets of Tokyo, Japan to protest human rights violations in Asia, demanding respect for freedom and democracy. Members of human rights organizations from Asian countries gathered in front of the United Nations University (UNU) building in the Shibuya district of the capital. The protesters carrying flags of East Turkistan, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Mongolia, chanted "Down with China", "Terrorist China", "Stop the Uyghur massacre", "Freedom to East Turkistan", "Release Suu Chii", "Help Southern Mongolia". The protesters supporting Tibetans, Uyghurs, Mongolians, Hon Kongers voiced atrocities and human rights violations by China during the protest titled “Show Respect for Democracy, Freedom, and Human Rights in Asia”. Later the demonstrators accompanied by the police marching from Omotesando Boulevard to Shibuya Station dispersed without incident. During the demonstration Uyghur Turks were represented in large numbers, human rights violations in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region were protested. China is accused of locking up hundreds of thousands of Muslims without trial in its western region of Xinjiang. But the government denies the claims saying re-education camps have been established for the "educational transformation of people who have been influenced by extremism". The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) views Tibetan disobedience, violent or nonviolent, as separatism. (Footage by Ahmet Furkan Mercan/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
