It’s a nice Fun-Day Monday here in New York City. It’s October 7th. And, Hoda, do you know what happened five and a half years ago today? HODA KOTB: Five and a half years ago today? No, I don’t. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I joined you on the TODAY Show. HODA KOTB: Oh, my God. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It’s our five and a half anniversary. HODA KOTB: Oh, my-- is it really today? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It’s happening. HODA KOTB: Five and a half years. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Five and a half years. Let’s celebrate, celebrate. HODA KOTB: Okay. Hot Holli-- Halloween costumes which we’re going to get to in a minute of the year. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. HODA KOTB: But we have a show, you guys, filled with strong-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Strong women. Amazing. HODA KOTB: --empowered women. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. And very, very different. We have, Elizabeth Smart with us today. HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I told you last week about reading her book. And how-- it’s just-- it’s so moving. It’s so powerful. HODA KOTB: It’s transformative, that book. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It is-- it gives you hope. If somebody can live through what she lived through and have the kind of grace and forgiveness and kindness and normalcy that she has today, there is hope for people, you know. HODA KOTB: And, you know, when you look at her, you reminded, like I think about our life problems, what we go through day in and day out, and you listen to Elizabeth’s story-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. HODA KOTB: --and honestly you think to yourself I didn’t know anyone could make it through something like that-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: No. No. HODA KOTB: --but she is one of those, kind of, shining examples. I can’t wait to sit down and talk to her. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She’s angelic. It’s just extraordinary. The other one just-- HODA KOTB: Diana Nyad is here. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Di—Diana Nyad, fresh from that amazing one hundred and ten miles swim from Cuba to the Keys. HODA KOTB: Can’t believe it. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And she’s going to be, I guess swimming for two days straight. HODA KOTB: In a pool. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And, you know what, if that weren’t silly enough, she thinks we’re going to get in it with her. HODA KOTB: What? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She’s out of her mind. HODA KOTB: They don’t make enough bathing caps. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: But we’re-- we’re very, very proud of her. We were among those who’ve said, you know, forget it, you naysayer’s. You know, this is a woman-- HODA KOTB: No. We love her. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. Yeah. We love her and we’re proud of her. HODA KOTB: All right. So, on our plaza it was a big, big, big morning, because Miley was here. (Excerpts from Miley Cyrus performing on Plaza) KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Oh, yeah. Okay. It’s going to be Miley kind of day around here. And apparently, she’s getting really, really getting very good grades for her appearance as musical guest and host of SNL. Did you see a little of it? HODA KOTB: Yes. I did see a little of it. And we’re going to roll that clip. But one thing you always can tell is, from our people behind the scenes you always get to know how-- how someone really is. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: We get the real scoop from people. HODA KOTB: And everybody who worked with Miley Cyrus behind the scene said she was so kind-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yep. HODA KOTB: --and so sweet-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Mm-Hm. HODA KOTB: --and so nice and so adaptable, all of those things-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Not a-- not a diva moment. HODA KOTB: No. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And-- and apparently Donna who also is our wardrobe lady here too-- HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --she said the same thing. She’s always like that at SNL. HODA KOTB: At SNL. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: So that’s it. That’s right. It’s how you treat people that matters. HODA KOTB: Yes, so anyways, so in case you missed it, here’s a little bit of SNL. MILEY CYRUS (SNL): I’m not going to do Hannah Montana but I can give you an update on what she’s been up to. She was murdered. And also we went back and forth on this. But guys, I just don’t think we should do that Wrecking Ball sketch. BOBBY MOYNIHAN: What? Come on mom is here. MILEY CYRUS: Sorry, Booby. Oh, look, it’s teddy. Great rehearsal with you earlier, Teddy. BOBBY MOYNIHAN: We shouldn’t be doing this. This is for kids. MILEY CYRUS: Okay. I’ll see you onstage. HODA KOTB: She had a lot of fun. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And well good for her, and she was-- wowing the crowd out there. Was she wearing a diaper, though? What was that? Because apparently Frank just called and said, I want to get you one of those, those pants, those pants. How-- how was your weekend? Sweetheart, let me ask-- HODA KOTB: It was-- but let show-- let show the-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Well, yeah-- HODA KOTB: --the Halloween costume of the year-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yes. HODA KOTB: --in case you are wondering. It is hot. It her teddy-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It can only fit a ten-year-old, I think. It’s so tiny. HODA KOTB: I cannot put-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Gerard was going to-- was going to put it on for it today, I wouldn’t have gone over Gerard, it’s left-- HODA KOTB: It would-- no-- you know what. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah, no. No. HODA KOTB: Anyway, so if you want the hot costume, you’ve just seen it. There it is. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Okay. HODA KOTB: It’s going to be everywhere. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You went off to beautiful Cayman Islands this weekend. And tell us about it. HODA KOTB: I went to-- I went to a breast cancer event. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Mm-Hm. HODA KOTB: Which was, by the way, it was a spectacular beautifully done event. Heather McLaughlin did the thing. And we have-- we have some pictures of just how remarkable the room was and how great the people were. And, you know, of all the people you meet at events like this-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. HODA KOTB: --and met a lot of people. I mean the room was rocking. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Wow. HODA KOTB: It was a-- it was a big party atmosphere, but there was one young lady-- oh, there was a guy who acted like he was a waiter and he started singing Pavarotti in the middle of the room. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Oh, yeah. HODA KOTB: It was-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Is his name Michael? Mike? HODA KOTB: I think it is. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: He looks from-- yes, I know him. HODA KOTB: And that’s my crazy-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: He used to be a waiter at Rio if it’s the same guy. HODA KOTB: Oh, it maybe. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yes. HODA KOTB: Because they all-- they call themselves the waiters. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yes. HODA KOTB: This girl, who you’re seeing here, Jill and her husband Bert (ph) are two remarkable people. She was a transformative figure in my life and is-- she’s a breast cancer survivor, has--has now bone cancer-- breast cancer that has moved to her bones. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: God bless her. HODA KOTB: And she’s an optimist. And if you look in her eyes, you can see it. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She looks the picture of health, Hoda. HODA KOTB: She stood at the podium and she doesn’t have a long time to live but she stood at the podium and said I’m the luckiest woman in the room. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She’s grateful. HODA KOTB: She’s married. She said I’m married to him and I’ve got all of these friends and people who support me. So it was a beautiful, beautiful weekend. And hats off to Jill. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I am so glad. That’s wonderful. HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. You came back without everybody. HODA KOTB: How was your weekend? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: My weekend looked like it was going to be lovely, but then something-- I had to be mommy all weekend long. No, it wasn’t Cody, no, it wasn’t Cass. They never call. They’re fine. Look at this. HODA KOTB: What happened? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: That is Bambino in the-- in the cone of shame. HODA KOTB: Oh, he’s the cone on? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It’s got the cone of shame on. He was not a happy puppy. HODA KOTB: What happened? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Bambino, I am sad to report, had a bowel obstruction. I know. I know a very bad bowel obstruction. HODA KOTB: Did he eat? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You know how dog wipes-- you know, rubs their bottoms as they go along. HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Well, he had node his-- his little butt until it was just-- it was awful. So I said we got to take him to the-- to the vet. Okay. So we take him to the vet. All weekend long, I spent putting Preparation H on Bambino and giving him benadryl every three-- every four hours so that it wouldn’t be itchy and slept with him all night. I was up all night Friday, all night Saturday. HODA KOTB: What? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I-- I -- any minute now he’s going to projectile-- HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: There’s no difference-- HODA KOTB: Between the two. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --between when I was taking care of my kids when they were little and Bambino? HODA KOTB: So wait. What was the obstruction? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I’m at-- I’m at fault. We’ve had, you know, we’ve had-- we’ve had different vets on through the year. HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You say-- dogs can have all the table food that people have. It’s-- if it’s healthy food, it’s healthy for them too. HODA KOTB: Good food for them, right? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I’ve always have given-- HODA KOTB: Yeah. Bam-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --Louis and Lola the same -- you know, they just got a little, tiny bit in there. HODA KOTB: Little scrub. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. HODA KOTB: Oh, no. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And he can’t-- he’s too little. HODA KOTB: He’s too little. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: His system can’t handle it. HODA KOTB: Okay. All right. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: So just a warning. If you have – yes. So he’s-- HODA KOTB: Look at his cone. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: He’s feeling better today. So I took the cone of shame off and he went right for his little bottom again. So we’re not quite out of the woods. HODA KOTB: But you’re getting there. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: But he’s been drugged all weekend long, so. HODA KOTB: I like it. Like us. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Oh, your heart just-- just goes out to them. HODA KOTB: Oh, he’s so cute. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You love them so much so anyway. HODA KOTB: All right. So it’s finally time for our big living room reveal. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah, let’s see this. HODA KOTB: Remember, Vera Dusahj (ph)-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Dusahj. HODA KOTB: --she won the makeover contest. Was that pronounced right? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Dusahj. We were-- we’ve got-- HODA KOTB: We messed it up last time if you remember. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Many times. It’s Dusahj and please don’t get it wrong again. HODA KOTB: So get it. So Vera is with her husband and her three teenage daughters and an eight-year-old son here in New York. And we’re going to reveal-- reveal-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You don’t say the City, you think you’re going to say it wrong? HODA KOTB: What is it? What is it? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Mahopac? I know that so well. HODA KOTB: Mahopac. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She’s from New York. HODA KOTB: New York. Just can’t do it when you’re not wrong. All right. So anyway, there are two great brothers, as you guys know, who have been helping us with this from HGTV homes. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: The property brothers. HODA KOTB: Yeah. Drew and Jonathan Scott are on the scene. You guy, how did the weekend go? JONATHAN SCOTT: The weekend is great. Where are we again right now? Do you want to pronounce that one more time? No, we’re having a lot of fun. My team’s been here working tirelessly through the weekend with the folks from HGTV Home to makeover. Basically it is night and day. DREW SCOTT: The Dusahj family are going to be blown away. And they’re such a beautiful family. I’m excited to see how they react. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Are these the before we’re seeing? HODA KOTB: Yeah, before. DREW SCOTT: That’s how we recommend your house. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Okay. HODA KOTB: So we’re going to show the after in a segment that’s coming up. Guys, we’re so excited. I saw them in People magazine, by the way, the recent one. They are very biggish brother. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: They are very, very big and important. HODA KOTB: Very fancy. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Great. You guys, looking forward to that. HODA KOTB: Thanks guys. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Okay. Now we’re back from the summer. We’re going to be doing Every Has a Story again on Thursday. HODA KOTB: Yep. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: So I got a letter from a Theresa Sareo, I believe it’s pronounced from here New York City. HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. What city? What area? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Manhattan. HODA KOTB: Okay. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And she’s a singer/songwriter, who was struck-- it’s a terrible story, we hear it too often. She was struck by an impaired driver-- HODA KOTB: Oh, gosh. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --in down-- in Midtown Manhattan on June 11, 2002. HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She lost her right leg and her hip. HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Imagine that, right on impact. Obviously, she was devastated. With the helps loved one, doctors, caregivers and music therapy, she did recover. And now she is using her-- her music gift to help others. She says the act of visiting and singing for other trauma patients, as a patient herself, many, many people freshly back from Iraq or Afghanistan-- HODA KOTB: Sure. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: -- truly transformed her. HODA KOTB: Is she on the phone? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: She is. She is now dedicated to her with them. HODA KOTB: Hi. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And she’s on the phone with us. Theresa, how are you? THERESA SAREO: Hi. I’m great. How are you? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Well, you sound awesome and we are so looking forward to meeting you on Thursday, but what-- what’s going to happen for the-- you’re going to make history here now, Theresa. I don’t know how many times we’ve done this. But I think we’re up to about fifty-- HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --Everyone Has a Story that we’ve done. You’re going to be the very first one that’s actually going to sing the song that David and I have written for you. We’re so excited about that. THERESA SAREO: Oh, I am just-- I am thrilled beyond belief and grateful-- grateful beyond words and so is my family. HODA KOTB: We can’t wait to you see you Thursday. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: And I’m so glad you don’t have to travel very far. HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: We’re looking forward to seeing you. THERESA: Me, too. See you soon. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: All right, honey. God bless. HODA KOTB: All right. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Okay. Favorite Things. HODA KOTB: It’s time for favorite things, you guys. If you buy one book, one book, one book, buy this book, David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. I thought, you know what, I saw it at the airport. I was traveling this weekend, I picked it up. It’s about how the little guy can beat the big guy, whether it’s a ragtag basketball team that beats the big team. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Mm-Hm. HODA KOTB: Whether it’s a ragtag army that beats the big army, whether it’s a kid with dyslexia who becomes the CEO of a company. When you read these stories, you go, oh, my God. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It inspires you. HODA KOTB: No, it makes you-- I tore through the whole book. I’m on the very last couple of pages and I don’t want it to end. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Oh, good. HODA KOTB: So I’m tip toeing through the end. So David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Well, not as not unusual. I have a book, too. And I read it on Saturday while I was holding-- HODA KOTB: Uh-Huh. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --it’s called "he Reason For My Hope and it’s by Billy Graham. HODA KOTB: Oh, yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: He is ninety-nine years old now. His son Franklin is going to be on with us tomorrow. That’s what I’ve been reading all these books-- HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --in anticipation of our-- of our guest. And-- next week, thank you, honey. HODA KOTB: Next week, yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Anyway, so I didn’t have to rush? HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Anyway, Billy is a dear friend, and but this book-- HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --I learned things about what Napoleon said about-- HODA KOTB: Mm-Hm. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --about Jesus, about what all these people through history have said. HODA KOTB: Oh, yeah. Interesting. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: --so it’s like a-- it’s fascinating. HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: I’d never known that. HODA KOTB: I love it. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: So it’s fifteen dollars on Amazon.com. HODA KOTB: And if you are wondering about the price of this bad boy, thirty-nine ninety-nine at Spirithalloween.com. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Okay. HODA KOTB: Forty dollars. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Forty dollars. HODA KOTB: All right. Could be it you? We’re about to surprise our fan of the week.
