Event Location(s): Today New York Studio | Description: Morales and Roker are joined in the Today New York Studio by "Entertainment Weekly" magazine's Jessica Shaw. AL ROKER: Okay. So February may be the shortest month of the year, but there is no shortage of entertainment events from new music to blockbuster movie releases, TV premieres and finales. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. And here with the dates to circle on our calendars is a senior writer for Entertainment Weekly, Jessica Shaw. And Jessica. good morning. JESSICA SHAW (Senior Writer, Entertainment Weekly): Good morning. NATALIE MORALES: All right. Let’s start off with February 6th, which is-- which is the finale of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. JESSICA SHAW: That’s true. Good-bye, Jay. He left once before,-- NATALIE MORALES: Yes. JESSICA SHAW: --this time it’s for good. Jay Leno is leaving on a good note,-- NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: --on a fifteen-month rating high. AL ROKER: Yep. JESSICA SHAW: He’s going to welcome his successor Jimmy Fallon tonight, but his final guest will be Billy Crystal and Garth Brooks. AL ROKER: All right. NATALIE MORALES: All right. Good one. AL ROKER: In fact, Jimmy Fallon’s got huge numbers this week. JESSICA SHAW: Yes. AL ROKER: Last week as well. JESSICA SHAW: Yeah. AL ROKER: Here’s another movie, next day, I cannot wait to see this, Monuments Men. JESSICA SHAW: Yeah. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. AL ROKER: What an incredible cast led by George Clooney and Matt Damon. NATALIE MORALES: Amazing. JESSICA SHAW: Amazing cast. Absolutely. George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, they play a bunch of guys who go undercover to retrieve art that was stolen by Hitler. Its George Clooney’s sixth directorial-- sixth time directing, but it’s not getting such great news from the critics, so we’ll see if it’s his first dud. AL ROKER: Hm. NATALIE MORALES: It is based on a true story. JESSICA SHAW: It is. NATALIE MORALES: So I think people may be interested. Okay. February 9th, I can’t wait for this date, this one circled on my calendar, The Walking Dead winter premiere. JESSICA SHAW: Yes, The Walking Dead. You know, a lot of people felt very claustrophobic the first half of the season because it all took place-- NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: --in the prison. They’re out, They’re out of the prison so everyone is scattered and we’ll be getting a lot more back stories, especially of Michonne, the warrior,-- NATALIE MORALES: Yes. JESSICA SHAW: --we’re going to get some good intel about her. NATALIE MORALES: Okay. AL ROKER: Now, one of my favorite shows last year was Netflix, House of Cards. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: Yes. AL ROKER: And I love this that they’re debuting it on Valentine’s Day. JESSICA SHAW: On Valentine’s Day, exactly. While your-- NATALIE MORALES: Very romantic. JESSICA SHAW: Right. While your binging shopping, you can also binge watch House of Cards because all thirteen episodes are released at once, which is the Netflix model. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are back as Washington, D.C.’s most diabolical couple, at least fictional. NATALIE MORALES: Yes. Oh, I can’t wait. I want to catch up on that one. Okay. February 17th, another big day for NBC. And this is the start of Jimmy Fallon taking over the Tonight Show. JESSICA SHAW: Yeah. He’s going old-school bringing the Tonight Show back to New York. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: Back to bad weather of New York City, and his first guest will be Will Smith and U2. NATALIE MORALES: Wow. Those are some big guests right there. AL ROKER: Okay. Downton Abbey, season four finale. It seems like it just started. JESSICA SHAW: I know. Well, it’s not a very-- you know, the U.K. model is not very long. AL ROKER: Short-- short series. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: Short series. This season has been kind of mixed, but I’ve seen the finale, it’s amazing. Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti guest-star. While Lady Mary’s love life may not get closure, if you’re a fan of Carson and Mistress Hughes, you don’t want to miss the final moments. AL ROKER: Carson Daly’s in it? JESSICA SHAW: He is. It turns out, he is. AL ROKER: Wow. JESSICA SHAW: Great accents. AL ROKER: Fantastic. NATALIE MORALES: I do love Paul Giamatti in it, though. He’s a scene stealer. JESSICA SHAW: Yes. AL ROKER: I would see Paul Giamatti read the phone book, you know. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. He’s incredible-- AL ROKER: He’s incredible. JESSICA SHAW: He’s amazing. NATALIE MORALES: --at anything. Okay. Now, for music lovers, the Fray has a new album coming out, this is February 25th. JESSICA SHAW: Yeah. The Fray bands out of Denver. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: I think of them as like a pour some, you know, take a bubble bath and watch reruns of Gray’s Anatomy kind of band. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. JESSICA SHAW: So this is their fourth album. AL ROKER: What? JESSICA SHAW: You know what I’m talking about, Al. AL ROKER: Huh? JESSICA SHAW: Their single is only-- their single debuted at number seven on the Adult Top 40. So we’ll see how good this does. It might not be the colossal international hit the previous albums were. AL ROKER: Okay. Let’s go back to TV. I know my-- my wife and daughter are waiting for this. NATALIE MORALES: And me. Love it. AL ROKER: Scandal. JESSICA SHAW: Me, too. AL ROKER: Mid season premiere on February 27th. JESSICA SHAW: Yes, so the cliff hanger was that Olivia Pope’s mom has actually not gone away. But what I’m merely watching for is Keri Washington is pregnant, how are they going to hide her belly? Is Olivia Pope going to be all of a sudden carrying laundry baskets? I don’t think so. I think we’re going to see a lot of very large Prada bags. NATALIE MORALES: Ooh. Okay. JESSICA SHAW: Yeah. Yes. NATALIE MORALES: Huge Prada bag. JESSICA SHAW: All in front of the belly. NATALIE MORALES: All right. Last but not least, we’ve had Non-Stop, it’s a movie starring Liam Neeson. JESSICA SHAW: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: He’s always so great. JESSICA SHAW: He is back in action hero mode. He plays an air marshal on a flight from New York to London, finds out that a passenger’s going to be killed ever twenty minutes. Interestingly, Lupita Nyong’o from 12 Years a Slave, she plays flight attendant number two. She has about three lines in this movie. So obviously it was filmed before the Oscar nominations came in. NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. Now she’s a breakout star. JESSICA SHAW: Yes. NATALIE MORALES: Jessica Shaw-- AL ROKER: Call it a hunch, I don’t think they’re going to be show-- showing this on the airline. JESSICA SHAW: Yes. No, no, no. NATALIE MORALES: I don’t think we’ll want to see that movie before we go in to Russia. Jessica Shaw, thanks so much. JESSICA SHAW: Thank you. NATALIE MORALES: Coming up next, I’ve got all the news you need before you walk the door this morning. A little bit later on, what is the best time of day to see a doctor or to ask for a raise. AL ROKER: We’re going to tell you right time/wrong time to do just about anything when it comes to your health, your money and your relationships. And the best time for that is coming up. NATALIE MORALES: That’s right.
