INT WASHINGTON, DC MS: NBC News' Peter Alexander reports and closes. 7:35:09 Curry is joined in the Today New York Studio by "Vanity Fair" magazine editor Mark Seal. CURRY: All right, Peter Alexander. Peter, thank you. Mark Seal is a contributing editor for Vanity Fair and he wrote the story which appears in the May issue. Mark, good morning. Mr. SEAL: Hi, Ann, great to be here. CURRY: Great to see you. Mr. SEAL: Thank you. CURRY: Your article is exceedingly well written. It does not tell us much more about the women as it does about the encounters. Mr. SEAL: Hm. Right. CURRY: And it gets into some very lurid details. In fact, so many details, one might ask, as Tiger has asked, why it's anybody's business but his own. Mr. SEAL: Well... CURRY: So how do you answer that? Mr. SEAL: Well, this is a story all about duplicity. I mean, on one hand, you have a man who's holding himself out to be a paragon of family values. But yet, he led a secret life. And it all came crashing down only four months ago, which is a remarkable short amount of time, on Thanksgiving night in his home. CURRY: Hm. You do break ground on this statement that Tiger made... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...that no one knew about his affairs in his--in his circle. You write about a woman who claims that--she says that she was one of his mistresses. She says that there were those in his inner circle who not only knew, they facilitated his affairs. Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: How widespread was this in--did you discover in your reporting? Mr. SEAL: Well, this is a billion-dollar brand, the greatest golfer of our time, and he has a lot of people around him. His agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG, you know, kept him sequestered from the media and behind the curtain of family values. Is that right? CURRY: Are you implying that Mark Steinberg had something--knew something about this? Mr. SEAL: Well, Mindy Lawton in the story says that after the Enquirer found out--allegedly found out about her affair, that she--that she called Tiger, and Tiger told her to call Mark Steinberg. And he said, `We'll take care of it.' And also, with Brian Bell, as I said, that he--some of the women said he arranged some of the travel for the mistresses. CURRY: You know, I'm wondering about these women... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...specifically and their motivation. Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: Now that they've discovered that they're not the only one... Mr. SEAL: Well, yeah. CURRY: ...how angry were they, how motivated do you think they might be now to hurt Tiger in any way they can in the interview with you? Mr. SEAL: I think hell hath no fury, you know? CURRY: So does that make you question some of the things they have told you? Mr. SEAL: No. Tiger himself said, `I've had affairs, I was unfaithful,' but he didn't name the women. But the women came forward, and they all seemed to keep some kind of evidence, the text messages, e-mails, phone calls, as if they were going to use them at a later date, which indeed they have. And they all--the sad thing about it is they all seemed to think they were the only one. CURRY: Beside the women--besides the women... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...you also talked to a man named John Merchant. Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: He is Tiger--Tiger's former lawyer. Mr. SEAL: Right, right. CURRY: And you write that he says that Tiger had a cadre of enablers, and he names... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...as being bad influences. Mr. SEAL: That's right. CURRY: Now, how much time did he say Tiger spent with these men, and why would he say that they were bad influences? Mr. SEAL: Well, he was very upset, because he was--he was very loudly and emotionally lamenting the fall of a great--of the man, the Tiger Woods that he knew. CURRY: But does he--but did he say that they contributed to his downfall? Mr. SEAL: He didn't know specifically, but he said that he warned him early on to stay away from them. CURRY: Hm. OK, so let's put a button on that one. And all--I think the part that is probably one of the most hurtful to the Tiger camp and one of the most, I think, eyebrow raising is when you write about Tiger's father... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...Earl Woods... Mr. SEAL: Right. CURRY: ...and you write about him as a womanizer. Mr. SEAL: Right, right. CURRY: You write about him as having exploited his son's contracts for his own personal gain. So I've got to ask you, where did you get this information... Mr. SEAL: Well... CURRY: ...and what made you willing to run with this? Mr. SEAL: Yes. Well, we have to give Earl Woods credit. First of all, he was a very dedicated man. He made Tiger Woods into the great golfer that he is. But at the same time, sources told me that he had another side to him, and they recounted that he came to a father of the year award once, you know, and he was inebriated and spoke on the podium incoherently. CURRY: The... Mr. SEAL: So this is what they--I was told. CURRY: Multiple sources, people who don't have an ax to grind told you this? Mr. SEAL: Mm-hmm. CURRY: Hm. The--I guess the question all this raises, because when you go into all these details, you--it does start to beg the question about whether that therapy can help--can help Tiger. Did you learn anything in your reporting about that? Mr. SEAL: Well, he himself said that he was in, you know, 45 days of outpatient--of inpatient treatment. We hope that it will. I mean, the interesting thing about all of this is he's going to be playing at the Masters, and I think people will be, you know, hoping that he will come out of this. I mean, if he can focus on that ball again and put all this behind him and come out and win, what a comeback that would be. CURRY: You think it might quiet his--all these critics? Or do you think... Mr. SEAL: I think winning does a lot. CURRY: All right, on that note we'll leave it. That's a lot of pressure, too. Mark Seal, thank you so much. Mr. SEAL: Thank you. CURRY: The issue of Vanity Fair is on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles today, and nationwide on April 7th. GFX: Vanity Fair magazine. 7:35:53 (:18) EXT DAY WS: Golfer Tiger Woods and wife Elin. GFX: Insert still of Woods and his father. GFX: Insert stills of Woods. 7:44:25 Lauer is joined in the Today New York Studio by CNBC's Maria Bartiromo. MATT LAUER, co-host: We're back now at 7:44. Is now the time to get back into the stock market? The Dow rose more than 11 points on Tuesday to close above 10,900, its highest point since September of 2008. CNBC's Maria Bartiromo is the anchor of "Closing Bell" and the author of the new book "The 10 Laws of Enduring Success." Hi, Maria, good morning. MARIA BARTIROMO reporting: Hi there, Matt, thanks. LAUER: Let's talk about this. Nineteen of the past 23 days on the market have been up days. I just mentioned, it's at the highest mark since it has--that it has been since September of 2008. So what's driving the market right now? BARTIROMO: Well, what's driving it is this expectation that things are getting better, and they are; although we will definitely need more evidence that, in fact, this economic recovery is on track in order for this rally to continue. We're seeing the jobs numbers out this week. That's going to be an important indicator. LAUER: The average investor out there who got battered with his or her retirement savings over the last couple of years and perhaps has been sitting on the sidelines has to be asking himself or herself a question: Did I miss this run-up? Is it still a good time to get in? Or do I risk a correction coming in the near future? BARTIROMO: Well, over the long term you want to be invested in the stock market. So I would shy against timing this market. Having said that, I think most people are looking to tap into the growth outside of the United States. We're talking about slow growth in the US; but when you look at places like China growing more than 10 percent, India growing 8 percent, you want to invest in the American franchise quality companies that have actually been able to tap into that kind of growth overseas. LAUER: I want to ask you about an interesting dynamic. Consumer confidence rose in March, but at the same time there are news reports that suggest that despite the market being up, most people don't think their portfolios are doing much better than they were a year or a year and a half ago. Is this a question of fear or perception or both? What? BARTIROMO: You know, I think it's fear and the idea that they're unsure of the stock market's long-term gains because of what we've just been through. But the bottom line is over the long-term, the stock market will deliver the best returns when you're looking at 10, 20-year period. LAUER: We've got job numbers coming out on Friday from the Labor Department. Unemployment right now is about 9.7 percent. What are we expecting? How might the markets greet the news? BARTIROMO: Well, we had some temporary employment over the last month, the Census Bureau hired a lot of workers. That's definitely going to show some growth in terms of jobs. So a lot of expectation out there that we're going to see a pretty good number come on Friday. But I suspect we are in a tough situation. We're not out of the woods, Matt. I think unemployment is going to be with us for a little while, because there's a lot of uncertainty out there on the part of companies. They're not going to add heads to the payroll right now. LAUER: When you--when you talk about uncertainty--and this is actually something you write about in your book. In uncertain times and even in times that are a little more sure, there is--there is this thing about successful people, they all seem to have an ability to adapt. All right, so how do you adapt to these particular circumstances? BARTIROMO: Absolutely. And that's why I wrote the book, because seeing all of those job cuts in 2008--this is a motivational book. It's time to say to yourself, look, this will pass. You need to look inside, look at your skill set and look at where the holes are. You need to figure out how you are going to survive and thrive in a changing economy. The media business is changing, financial services, manufacturing. You need the right skill sets to actually survive and, more importantly, thrive. LAUER: Well, I like what you said, you have to look inside. You've got to know yourself. You--self-knowledge is, I think, the way you describe it in the book. BARTIROMO: I'm so glad you said that, because that is the number one first law of success. You need to know what you're good at, you need to where that passion in your belly is. Because in order to be successful, you want to love what you do and work really hard. And the only way to do that is really know what you're good at and know yourself. Self-knowledge is important. LAUER: And you have to display initiative, you can't wait for guys like us and ladies like us to say it on the air. You've got to get out there make some things happen for yourself. BARTIROMO: Rattle the cage. LAUER: All right, Maria, thank you very much. BARTIROMO: Thanks, Matt. LAUER: Good to see you. And the book is "The 10 Laws of Enduring Success." And a reminder, you can catch more of Maria's advice on "Closing Bell." That's weekdays at 3 PM Eastern on CNBC. 7:20:21 Promises Promises The Musical Comedy 7:20:36 Canada See It Now Website. 7:21:06 Yoplait 7:21:36 Promises Promises The Musical Comedy 7:22:20 Chevrolet Vehicles 7:23:00 Alice In Wonderland-Movie 7:23:15 Lean Cuisine 7:23:00 Kelloggs 7:24:00 Walgreens 7:24:30 Capri Sun 7:25:00 Amazon Kindle 7:25:30 Hershey's 7:25:45 Looped A Comedy On Broadway 7:41:25 Big Lots 7:42:15 Crest 7:42:30 Post Honey Bunches Of Oats 7:42:45 Twilight: New Moon-Movie 7:43:00 Lyrica 7:48:33 Folgers 7:49:03 Nicorette 7:49:18 Triscuits 7:49:33 Kelloggs 7:50:03 Why Did I Get Married Too-Movie 7:50:18 Lubriderm 7:50:33 Wal Mart 7:51:56 Big Lots 7:52:26 Gold Bond 7:52:41 HR Block 7:52:56 Garnier 7:53:26 Miracle-Gro 7:53:56 How To Train Your Dragon-Movie 7:54:16 Alli 7:54:26 Visit Las Vegas.com 7:55:36 Memphis Play on Broadway 8:05:24 Tru Green 8:05:54 Tums 8:06:09 Burlington Coat Factory 8:06:24 Mr. Rooter Plumbing 8:06:39 Alice In Wonderland on DVD 8:07:09 Cadbury 8:07:24 Post 8:07:39 Claritin D 8:07:54 Stainmaster Carpet 8:15:35 Wal Mart 8:16:05 Last Song-Movie 8:16:20 Lean Cuisine 8:16:35 Jif Peanut Butter 8:16:50 Chevrolet Vehicles 8:17:20 Motrin PM 8:17:35 HR Block 8:17:50 Simply Orange 8:18:05 Macy's 8:25:46 Green Day's American Idiot On Broadway 8:36:00 Addams Family Musical 8:36:15 JC Penney 8:36:30 Empire Carpet 8:37:00 Optimum On-line 8:44:00 Cirque Du Soleil 8:44:15 Home Goods 8:44:30 Wachovia 8:45:00 Florida Kets 8:45:30 General Mills 8:51:10 Race On Broadway 8:51:40 Tanger Outlets 8:55:37 Sondheim On Sondheim Musical 9:13:50 Pristiq 9:15:05 Activia 9:15:35 Turbo Tax 9:15:50 Alli 9:16:05 Sea Bond Denture Adhesive 9:22:06 Restasis 9:23:06 Kelloggs 9:23:36 Green Giant 9:23:51 Activia 9:24:41 Roc 9:25:11 Activia 9:25:46 Canada See it Now Website 9:26:16 Home Goods 9:26:31 Blue Diamond Almond Breeze 9:33:31 Advair 9:34:31 Post 9:34:46 Jif Peanut Butter 9:34:16 Loreal 9:35:31 Capital One 9:36:01 Dannon 9:36:31 Walgreens 9:37:01 Mr. Rooter 9:43:30 Dove 9:44:00 Reese's Pieces, Peppermint Patty, Almond Joy. 9:44:15 Olive Garden 9:44:30 Sunny D 9:44:45 Vagisil 9:45:00 Lipitor 9:46:00 Kelloggs 9:46:30 Zyrtec 9:52:00 Tanger Outlets 9:53:00 Raymour & Flanigan 9:55:00 Blinds To Go 9:56:00 Sleepys 7:30:28 (:44) Panning video of spectators holding up signs and waving outside of Studio 1A in New York City. 7:51:50 (:05) Panning video of spectators holding up signs and waving outside of Studio 1A in New York City. 8:00:00 (:21) Panning video of spectators holding up signs and waving outside of Studio 1A in New York City.
