Senator Cornyn responds to planted news about tax reform provision

Texas Senator John Cornyn says that a left-wing website masquerading as a legitimate news outlet advertised the breaking news story about the tax cuts and jobs act in breathlessly claiming without a spread shred of evidence a provision had been airdropped, a salacious tail from beginning to end, completely false and invented. Cornyn says that as the Senate intelligence committee had investigated Russian intelligence operatives effort to undermine public confidence in the 2016 election, the phony news story picked up on social media and in mainstream media would make a Russian intelligence officer proud. Cornyn quotes from a letter suggesting it takes a great deal of imagination and no small amount of partisanship to argue the provision in public for over a month was somehow covert and a last-minute addition to the conference report on the bill, that reminds him of Mark Twain quote that that a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its boots, only faster today because of social media.
