Immigration detention center in Ibaraki Prefecture opens doors to press following series of incidents

Video footage taken late in May shows the interior of the Higashi-Nihon Immigration Center in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, during a tour given to journalists following a series of events at the facility. Maintained by the Immigration Bureau of Japan, the detention facility houses 337 males from 41 countries, about 70 percent of whom have applied for refugee status, while others await possible extradition for violating Japan’s visa regulations. The detainees have access to telephones, a meeting room for visitors, a counseling office, a recreation room and washing machines, among other facilities. They are also given time to spend outdoors and fed three times daily. An Indian detainee committed suicide at the facility in April and three attempted suicides were recorded in May.
