Thor Heyerdahl and Others Aboard Ra
(Original Caption) Heyerdahl's Ra on the Move. Giza: About 500 Cairo students pull hard on the rope as they try to drag past the pyramids the 10 ton papyrus boat Ra in which Thor Heyerdahl , the Norwegian Kon-Tiki expedition leader, plans to cross the Atlantic. The 45 foot vessel, which had been stuck in the sand at the foot of the Giza pyramids, is to be taken by lorry to Alexandria for shipment to Morocco where Heyerdahl hopes to set sail with a crew of six from different countries. The Ra was placed on the wooden planks to be pulled across the desert from from the pyramids shipyard site towards the asphalt road.
