Lesbos Remains Destination For Refugees
EFTHALOU, GREECE - MAY 23: Thousands of used life preservers and pieces of rafts used by refugees in their attempted crossings from Turkey to Greece lay in a pile on the island of Lesbos on May 23, 2018 in Efthalou, Greece. The Greek island is home to over 9,000 asylum seekers who crossed the Aegean Sea from Turkey's nearby shore by boat, usually at night to avoid interception. Although the numbers of arrivals on Lesbos are lower than at the beginning of the crisis in 2015, when Syrians and Iraqis fled ISIS-controlled strongholds, boatloads of refugees from those countries and other troubled areas continue to land there, and critics say the local governments have yet to manage the situation, as refugees continue to wait for transfer to the mainland and less temporary legal status while living in overcrowded camps suffering from major infrastructure problems and difficulty in meeting their residents' basic needs.
