Valdemar "Val" Herrera poses for a portrait in a baseball field dugout Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, in Houston. Herrera was four days away from taking over his dream job as director of a city baseball league in Las Vegas when he was arrested earlier this year for allegedly plotting to kill his wife. As he reached for the keys to open his car door and take his mother and sister to breakfast, a Las Vegas police officer came at him and threw him to the ground. Eleven days later he was in a Brazoria County jail cell with hardened, tattooed convicts and his bail was set at $1 million. A grand jury declined to indict him, but three months later he is unable to find a job because of the publicity and he so far has been unable to regain the custody of his 15-year-old son. "I am at the lowest levels of my life based on what they've done," Herrera said. ( Steve Gonzales / Houston Chronicle ) (Photo by Steve Gonzales/Houston Chronicle via Getty Images)
