Washed up Dogfish. - stock photo

Close-up of the head of a freshly dead dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) washed up by the tide. Dogfish, also called Rockfish/ Rock Salmon are scavengers, and frequently take any bait on an angler’s line, and so they are easily caught. Traditionally called dogfish because they hunt in packs, they are members of the shark family, and have 5 gill slits on each side of the body (these are visible in the image). Their rough skin was, according to the British Sea Fishing website, once sought after to use to polish wood, and as a pumice.
