Computer scientist Edward Fredkin, speaking in 1982, on the historic significance of the development of artificial intelligence in the overall history of the Universe, citing it alongside the creation of the Universe and the appearance of life.“When you put all of this into some kind of perspective in some sort of universal terms, what we see is that, I think of it as three great events in a sort of history. One might be like, the creation of the Universe is obviously the biggest and most important event. The appearance of life which is a [sic] almost magical organising principle and is extremely diverse, as we see on this planet, is another major event.
