Lebanese flee south amid intense Israeli air strikes

TRIPOLI, LEBANON - SEPTEMBER 24: Thousands of Lebanese have been forced to flee to the north or abroad as a result of Israeli air strikes on southern Lebanon.Israeli air strikes on Tyre, Nabatieh and other areas are forcing thousands of Lebanese to follow the coastal road towards Saida, the capital Beirut and Tripoli in the north.The country is experiencing its largest displacement since the 2006 Israeli offensive, with Lebanese fleeing the south and sheltering in schools and other emergency centers.The displacement has led to traffic congestion, shortages of basic goods and increased demand for shelter and rental accommodation.Following the attacks on the eastern towns of Bekaa and Baalbek, Israel distributed leaflets from the air urging residents to leave their homes.Many families in these towns chose to flee to Aakkar in the north or to Syria.Since the morning of 23 September, the Israeli army has carried out hundreds of air strikes on southern Lebanese towns and the Bekaa and Baalbek regions.The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that 558 people, including 50 children and 95 women, had been killed and 1835 injured in the attacks.
